Amid Red Upper Lips and High Fevers

The weekend begins with red upper lips,

For five straight minutes, her nose bleeds,

As my husband and I try to stop the bleeding and console her,

Our daughter, confused and frightened by the red fluid trickling down her soft upper lip.

Oh, how these moments break my heart.

We conclude what happened is from a broken blood vessel from nose picking,

And continue with our plan for the day,

With chicken for lunch and sample treats at the store,

The two kids especially enjoy our weekend errands.

Oh, how these moments make me smile.

Then to the car wash we go before heading home,

When it was whimpering for the boy and girl before,

It was now excitement to see Spongebob and Dora,

With squeals and giggles as we pass the tunnel to wave at Taz and Clifford.

Oh, how these moments warm my heart.

But on I-75 on the car ride home,

I turn around to see yet again red little fingers,

With the car stopped roadside and cars whizzing by for five minutes,

I succeed to halt another nosebleed, another frazzled crying babe.

Oh, how I want to switch places with her.

So, to the ER we go to resolve our doubts now,

But after a long process of waiting, chasing around a still active toddler,

And watching Yo Gabba Gabba in the waiting area,

It is indeed concluded to be just a broken blood vessel inside her nose.

Oh, how this news relieves my heart.

Fifteen hours later, it is my son’s turn,

What allergies he and his sister share,

Has now turned into low then high fevers,

With a trip and tests for both at the doctor’s, thankfully they just have a cold,

Oh, but his fevers, I wish they’d go away.

What is typically a playful and boisterous boy,

Is now irritable, whiny, and snotty,

Just watching television, blowing his nose every other minute,

Not even a single attempt to tease his sister dear.

Oh, the very few times I wish he actually would.

Tonight, after dinner,

While I cuddle my son, chatting with him,

My daughter comes with her toy stainless pot complete with a lid,

And as if to offer it whole-heartedly, she says in her sweetest voice, “Zoup Dale.”

Oh, how everything in this moment completes today and everyday.

Finally, what a blessing just red upper lips and high fevers are,

And to realize that things could be worse, but are thankfully not,

How humbling it is to be reminded of the gift of good health that we often take for granted,

And to cherish our loved ones on healthy and “red upper lips and high fever” days.

P.S. Yes, amid red upper lips and high fevers, I am grateful for the general calm I had in my heart and mind this past weekend and today.  I am grateful that the Universe injected modest but meaningful moments with my family that I will forever cherish despite several unpleasant “first-times.” What modest but meaningful moments did you share with loved ones today? Yesterday?

Integrity

By Alpha Miguel-Sanford

Recently, the word integrity has been popping in and out of my regular day routine. I see it more frequently in the books that I read; I hear on the radio station on my way to work and I find myself saying it more frequently than before. In fact, yesterday in a conversation with a fellow professional, I caught myself saying that my ‘integrity’ is my strength.

I know I am more mindful of this word, thus its occurrence in my daily normal life. But, why I became mindful of the word – I have no idea.

But today I am sharing with you, how ‘integrity’ affects my life (just recently):

  1. When I am confronted with frustrated faces, I choose to respond better when I think of my ‘integrity’ and how the other person  (who is already frustrated) will take what I say.
  2. When I read emails (I have multiple accounts), I choose to hit reply when I feel I am confident that this is what I want I, unless I am in a rush.
  3. When I hear gossips among my circle of friends, I try (yes, it is hard!) to listen to each side of the story and keep my mouth shut (yes, it is hard!)
  4. When the bridge goes up at 6:20 AM in the morning and I am on my way to work, I hold my breath and carry on without swearing.

Integrity is essential in who we are, not just professionals but as individuals living our lives outside our profession. It is an important reminder when we are at a cross road and we do not know how to react, respond or manage a certain situation, then we say:  Is this what I am as a person?

It is also important at decision making and how the outcome will affect us. It serves as our guide.

It is also a tool in dealing with stressful situations and makes us answer the same question: Is this what I am as a person?

Now…

How about you? What is your ‘integrity’?

How do you think you project your ‘integrity’ to your friends, to your students, to your colleagues?

How are you going to be mindful of your ‘integrity’ at work?

Success Story: Marie Alexis Baldia, ‘Happy Soles’

By Alpha Miguel-Sanford

No matter how young or old you are, what matters most is the time you’ve spent doing something for good, not only for yourself but for others. Alexis Baldia, co-founder of Happy Soles is a young and vibrant lady fromCagayan de Oro,Philippineswho knows for sure how to help out despite being young. It didn’t prevent her from going out in the community to understand the needs of the children around her community, thus Happy Soles is born.

Today, she shares her story behind her advocacy and I want you to realize that no matter how old or young you are, it is never too late or too early to start something that will make great ripples for the good of many.

Here is her story:

AMS:  Tell us about yourself. Your education, training and where you are currently involved in.

Alexis: I’m Marie Alexis R. Baldia, 20 years old; I graduated Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Xavier University- Ateneo de Cagayan last March 2012. I am currently preparing for my Nursing Licensure Exam before I take up my medicine course.

I am currently involved in Happy Soles: CDO Funds for Little Kids, which is a youth organization we started last June 2011. It is composed of youth volunteers from Cagayan de Oro City who advocate in education for marginalized children in our city, specifically in the far flung areas. Our projects include daycare improvement, tutorials for the children, provision of teaching and learning resources, youth empowerment and other projects that help children have better access to education. There are now 180 children whom we serve and who continue to inspire us in doing more in the service of their community and over 25 youth volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to help these children.

AMS:  Tell us about how you become involved in your current project and its mission?

Alexis: It all started last June 2011, when I, my sister, and four of my friends went to a far flung area for a school project. We saw a lot of children and decided to go back to give out slippers, which is why we called our project “Happy Soles”. When we went back to the area, we heard from their parents that the children were not in school because their teacher was sick for several weeks so we decided to pinch-hit every Sunday to give them tutorials and primarily to encourage them to still continue going to school. We raised funds, sold cookies, and anything that will help us provide learning kits for the children. After several months I saw Mr. Jay Jaboneta’s article in reader’s digestasia and I sent him a message in facebook to express how he has inspired us to continue our desire to help. Amazingly he replied and supported us all the way. Through him I was able to meet truly inspiring and influencing people like Dr. Anton Lim and Mr. Josiah Go and many others who really contributed a lot as to why we continue to push ourselves to be involved, to take part and to take action in initiating projects that create social impact.

AMS:  What is your vision of these projects?

Alexis: We are looking towards helping more and more communities in our city especially the children to have better access to education and to help them receive the quality of education they deserve.  We aim to empower more youth leaders to take part and be involved in nation-building through initiating projects that create social impact. We want to inspire them with our story that our movements, may they be small, are always bound for greater things if we just put our heart and passion into them.

AMS:  Who or what inspired you to be who you are? Have you always been involved in similar projects?

Alexis: My family, friends, mentors and the people who support me have inspired me in so many ways. I am blessed to grow up in a family who became my first teacher and I am surrounded with friends and mentors whose commitment to serve and passion towards leadership is amazing.  The children we serve in the communities are my ultimate inspiration. They are the reason why we committed to do what we do and to put our heart and passion to them.

AMS:  What are some of the greatest achievement that you’ve had?

Alexis: For me to continuously give the best I can in everything I do, I always consider myself as still young and there is still so much that life can bring. Let’s just say, that for my greatest achievement, I’m still trying to get there J

AMS:  Who are/were your motivators?

Alexis: The volunteers of Happy Soles whose commitment and love for the children is overwhelming. The amazing people who believed in our group, to mention some of them, Mr. Jay Jaboneta, Dr. Anton Lim, and Mr. Josiah Go, they are the ones whom I consider my models and mentors. And most especially, the children of the communities we serve and we will be serving, they are our number one motivators who really push us to do more and to continue our movements.

AMS:  If you were to tell us what are the most important skills that you need in order to be successful in life- what are they?

Alexis: Two latin words. MAGIS and SATIS.

Magis means never settling for less and always striving for more.

Satis which means knowing when to say you have done enough.

These are the two meaningful words in the spirit of St. Ignatius that I carry with me and I strongly believe will help us pursue our desires. In life, in order to be successful, we must always give our best in everything that we do and to do more for Christ and for others.

AMS:  What are your next goals for yourself?

Alexis: I want to live life to its fullest by appreciating what I have now and making the best out of it. J

AMS:  What is your definition of success?

Alexis: Success for me is being able to discover your passion and pursue your desires. It is not every day that people realize the meaning of our life and actually lives up to see that purpose being followed. Success is being able to have the faith in ourselves and God, courage to seek what we truly want, wisdom to realize our potentials, and the determination to do what we aspire.

Solitude

Photo and Text by Ria G. Rombaoa
For those who are not frightened by the solitude, everything will have a different taste.
In solitude, they will discover the love that might otherwise arrive unnoticed.
In solitude, they will understand and respect the love that left them.
In solitude, they will be able to decide whether it is worth asking that lost love to come back or if they should simply let it go and set off along a new path.
In solitude, they will learn that saying ‘No’ does not always show a lack of generosity and that saying ‘Yes’ is not always a virtue.
And those who are alone at this moment, need never be frightened by the words of the devil: ‘You’re wasting your time.’
Or by the chief demon’s even more potent words: ‘No one cares about you.’
The Divine Energy is listening to us when we speak to other people, but also when we are still and silent and able to accept solitude as a blessing.

And when we achieve that harmony, we receive more than we asked for.
 - Paulo Coelho
I had a friend who once told me that he was never afraid to be alone and thru solitude, he’s able to get in touch with himself and find peace… I never understood what he said until I experienced it. We have this perception that solitude is such a dark state. It is something that we all try to avoid and never want to experience but it is not. Solitude only becomes scarry if you allow it to engulf your whole being. Here are some random thoughts that I have written…
May you experience, rejection, defeat, loss, failure and find reasons behind these things.
May you find the importance of idleness and beauty in things that are mundane.
May you not be bitter and spread ill will against the one who caused you hurt.
May the embers of the past be your guide to a purposeful and meaningful life.
May the love that you lost be given back to you. Maybe not the way you expect it to but the way you deserve to have it.
