Three Simple Ways To Achieve Your Goal

The difference between a winner and a loser is that the winner has goals and action plans to support them but the loser does not.  Oftentimes when you are at a party and you start talking to people you can easily spot a winner versus a loser by their simple statements. Person A says “You know, I want to be rich” while Person B claims, “By 2014, I will earn $500, 000 a year by slowly investing my money to some trading companies, change my marketing plan and make it more profitable and also rethink of maximizing my productivity.” You see what I am saying here?

The winner has goals that are measurable,  deadline-specific  and with attached course of actions to get to where she wants. The winner states goals that are in the present tense and feels confident about achieving them. The winner is diligent, consistent and dedicated to what she wants to get in life. She is rock solid with her goal. No one can rock the boat she is in – because she knows  very well and is committed to making it happen.

How about you?

Are you a winner?

If not, but would like to become one, here are three simple ways to get you started:

1. Know what X goal you want You can not get to where you want  unless you know exactly  where to go. Just like taking a bus or a train – if you suddenly decided to take the train or the bus and just want to go ‘somewhere’  without a specific destination, you  know you will be wasting your time with the possibility of getting lost. Until you know exactly where you are going, you will never know your destination. So, right now at this very moment I want you to ask yourself, “What do I want in life?”

2. Decide that you want that X goal, badly. I was speaking with a colleague one day and I told her one of my goals in life (I should not have said anything but I did it anyway) and she looked at me and asked, “How was your childhood? Were you deprived?” Not only was she judgmental in the questions she asked but later revealed to me that she, being in an average American household did not desire anything else but to live simply and to travel around the world. She said she has done that and has no desire whatsoever to go beyond that. I looked at her and thought to myself, “I see then why you live the way you live and are telling me that your relative helps you with the bills!”  What I gather here is unless you want a certain goal so badly, you will never never be able to achieve something better in life. Unless you have a burning desire to reach for your goals, you will either a) not achieve it or b) you will achieve it but will take longer or you will be going from one goal to another without a direction. Right now ask yourself, “How much do I want this X goal  in my life?”

3. Write your X goal – There is a miracle between what goes on in your head and your hand. In school, teachers ask you to write the important points of the lesson so you will remember it when the test comes. You will be surprised that 9 out 10, when you write something you can easily retrieve it from your memory. In life, when you write something your sub consciousness will work in such a way that your actions will follow through with what you wrote. I remember growing up I used to have my bucket list every year and recently as I was digging through my old files, I saw a page I wrote in 2004. On it are the 50 things I want to achieve in life. As I was going down the list I found myself checking 13 out of the 50 and put a huge smile of my face. How about you? Have you made your list yet? Ask yourself, “If I want to be this X person, would I commit to write down my goals?” I will tell you, you’d be stupid if you don’t – and if you don’t, you’d be the like that same loser down the street who does not have any goals at all.

Not Just The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow

The first quarter of 2013 is almost over; it seems like we were all just celebrating its beginning, and setting humble and grand goals for ourselves.  As we evaluate what we have so far accomplished, how many of us could say that we are where we want to be in our goals timeline despite life’s demands and surprises? How many steps forward have we taken to achieve our goals only to have to take a few steps back to accommodate life? As frustrating as this situation may be, I’d like to remind myself, especially this month of that ever so sparkly “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,” as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Just as there are multiple other sayings and metaphors in different cultures that echo the same message,  “a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” seems to be a picturesque, calm journey, even designed for us to find an even better ending to our journey, versus the “light at the end of the tunnel” that alludes to experiencing “dark” before “light. Now, if only our journey in life mimicked such a colorful experience from beginning to end! Wait, it could! If we want it to!

So, whenever that grey hue (or “you”) tries sneaking in your already colorful life, think not just of the pot of gold of the end of the rainbow, but also the red, orange, yellow and other vibrant colors of everyday if or when you:

  1. Lose your wallet on the subway (a reason to buy a new one!);
  2. Hear about a friend’s dishonesty (another reason to evaluate your own values!);
  3. Don’t land your dream job at the United Nations (an opportunity to better your craft);
  4. Mess up a doctored pancake recipe (a chance to discover your ability to double-doctor the same batter and succeed with the help of the oven!); and
  5. Not have an article completed due today and decide to dilly-dally even more by playing artist with your child, instead (a fantastic reminder about holding hands with life and loved ones, and surely being inspired to finish that article!).

What color will you paint that seemingly grey moment today?

Happy “Rainbowing!”

Do you remember when you were a little kid and your parents told you that you could be anything you wanted to be? Then what happened? You grew up, and got a job just like everyone else. You had children just like everyone else. Then you told your children that they could be anything they wanted to be.

Where does this cycle stop? It stops with you.

I’m a huge fan of education, but nowadays you don’t need a writing degree to write a book. The old traditional way of doing things is gone and there are nothing but resources available – most of the time for free – to reach your goals.

In fact, most of the time it has to do with sweat equity more than anything else. I fear that the course, certification or hoop that you think you have to jump through is there because you put it there yourself. Perhaps it lends itself to some self-validation, or more often than not, it’s because you’re stalling.

So if 50 Cent can transform himself from street thug to rapper to business owner and philanthropist – you can too. Stop making excuses, putting up roadblocks and self-sabotaging your dreams. Get. It. Done.

Success Story: Gerry Nicklas of Penns Hill Soap Company

penns hill soap2

Gerry Nicklas, President of Penns Hill Inc. in Quincy, Massachusetts knows how to create something out of nothing. He was in between jobs when he created his soap company that is 100% made from olive oil. It has been well received by customers around the area and in the United States that he continues to market his “passion” into a business.

Gerry shares his story with us:

Alpha: Tell us about yourself and your business.

Gerry: My name is Gerry Nicklas and I am a biochemist with an expertise in the development and manufacturing of vaccines and biotherapeutics.  When the company I worked for was purchased by a large pharma company, I (shall we say) found myself home a lot and looking for things to do in between job interviews.  I was spending time on the internet searching for openings in my field, and somehow came across an article and recipe about making castile soap.  The process seemed easy enough (given my chemistry background) so I gave it a whirl using products I had on hand (water and extra virgin olive oil) and purchased food grade sodium hydroxide.   The soap was the best soap that I ever used.  I found it very soothing and soon noticed I managed to avoid my usual outbreak of winter dry skin.  My family and friends raved about the soap so I enhanced my basic formula by adding natural essential oils and botanicals for variety.  As is my nature, I researched the history of castile soap further and discovered the original formula dates back to the 11th century and was made from 100% olive oil.  The soap was named for the Castile region in Spain.  Today, you will find many brands of soap that call their soap “castile” but most make their soap from a blend of oils, and may have olive oil as an afterthought or trace element ingredient.  Since my 100% olive oil soap was so well received, a decision was made to develop this hobby into a business, and the Penns Hill Soap Company was born.

Alpha: How is your business different from other businesses in the area?

Gerry: If by other businesses you mean other handmade soap businesses, there are several things that set us apart from other soapers.  First, when I decided to create a business I decided to create my products by following the original basic formula and process.  When I thought carefully about the era when castile soap was first made, the first thoughts that came to mind were the quality of the ingredients.  Although they probably didn’t use terms like “organic” or “extra-virgin”, what else could they have used for ingredients?  After all, in the 11th century, “green” was a way of life!  I use only organic extra virgin olive oil as the carrier oil (instead of a blend) and use only organic essential oils and other organic botanicals like oatmeal, cinnamon, and vanilla for fragrance and texture.  You won’t find ingredients you cannot pronounce, nor will you find detergent, alcohol, paraben or artificial softeners.  Sure, the ingredients are more expensive than non organic, and essential oils are more expensive than artificial fragrances but I believe there are many folks looking for natural organic products that are made with high standards and less “corporate” than the mass produced version.  Look at how farmer’s markets, organic clothing and environmentally friendly products have taken off.  Consumers that buy those items understand and appreciate (and almost demand) the difference.  Our soaps are made in small batches. Bar soaps are hand cut, trimmed, and wrapped.  Liquids are hand filled and labeled.  We can create custom blends as long as we can find the ingredients that meet our quality standards.  I think the other thing that sets me and my company apart is my biochemistry backround.  I understand the science behind the product and the importance in creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and quality control measures.  I take what I do very seriously and I am passionate about the quality of the final product.  Our soap is not “melt and pour” and not as decorative as other hand made soap.  Our goal is to provide a high quality product that is gentle and can be used by almost anyone, not necessarily something that is designed to be decorative and used as a bath accessory.  We’ve seen many handmade soaps in our travels that are works of art and almost too pretty to use.  Our customers tell us our soap is attractive, but our main goal is for them to use our soaps and enjoy the benefits we strive to provide.  Because it is detergent free and the natural glycerin is retained, the soap is designed to moisturize your skin and hair.

Alpha: How do you see yourself in this business in the next five years?

Gerry: In the next five years, I expect the business to grow at a steady pace.  I see myself focusing on developing new cleansing and personal care products.  I expect the business to grow where we will need to hire several full time employees.  No matter how much our company grows, our products will always be made with pride in the USA.

Alpha: Who or what inspired you to start this business?

Gerry: Being unemployed inspired me to start this business but my wife, Terri, encouraged me to keep it going.  She has been my best advocate.  We work together – I make the soap products and she makes recommendations for creating new varieties.  She handles the details around marketing and sales and has been invaluable in developing the website, designing labels, photographing the soaps, creating gift baskets, and working on developing exposure on social websites.

Alpha: What are some of the greatest achievements that you’ve had in doing what you do?

Gerry: Finding something that I am passionate about, turning it into a business, and having fun along the way.

Creating a high quality product that we really believe in.

Repeat customers

Rave reviews of our products

Requests for interviews about the company and it’s products

Orders from all over the USA and Europe from the website

Developing a wholesale as well as retail market.

Alpha: What are the most important skills that a woman needs in order to be successful in business – what are they?

Gerry: The most important skills that anyone needs to be successful in business are:

Have a vision, mission and plan for your business that is strong enough to give you direction, but flexible enough to be adjusted when necessary

Maintaining product excellence

Listening to customers

Creativity

Marketing

Tenacity

Patience (especially when working with your spouse!)

Understanding the difference between working “in” the business and working “on” the business.

Staying cutting edge.  No company should sit back on its laurels if it wants to stay alive and thrive.  You don’t want to end up in the brand name graveyard!

Get advice when needed. Ask good questions, listen to the answers.

Alpha: What are your next goals for yourself and for your business?

Gerry: The next goals are to expand the line further, improve social media and website exposure and be recognized as an advocate for toxin free skin, hair and body care products.

Alpha: What is your definition of success?

Gerry: My definition of success in business is producing high quality products that either solve a problem or create enjoyment and having fun in the process.

Who really matters?

There are two kinds of people in the world. People who believe in you and people who don’t.

People who don’t believe in you may have their reasons-they are jealous of you, they don’t think anyone else can be good at something or maybe they are plain negative.

Don’t waste your life trying to convince the people who don’t believe in you, because that would be nothing but a waste of time. Instead, work on strengthening the bond between you and the people who believe in you, because in the end it’s the people who have faith in you matter.
