You Rust When You Rest

The only thing constant is change.

 

I grew up on the prairies and I now I live on the East Coast.  I moved to an area where folks get their car’s undercarriage sprayed yearly.  Where folks ask their neighbours to drive their cars while they are on holidays to make sure the brakes don’t seize up.  Where folks, when the dog days of summer arrive, get weighted down by all the damp.

 

As human beings, we like structure, patterns and habits – and that’s okay.  Where our habits break down is when they are detrimental to either our physical, mental or emotional health.  Often times throughout life, we get stuck.  Stuck in a job, stuck in a relationship or perhaps stuck in a lifestyle pattern.  The first step is just like any other: when we realize there is something to take issue with, we’ve started the process.

 

I feel it is important to notice the difference between the ebb and flow in life and when a situation is truly stuck.  Ebb and flow have patterns of their own, but are healthy.  There is an end in sight.  Stuck goes on for months or even years and shows no light at the end of the tunnel.

 

Freedom to change comes with a price: unpredictability.  There is a chance for failure and nobody likes to fail.  However, the only way to grow is through failure.  Fail better.

 

I was recently offered a job.  I was told by the employer that while I would have to make a lifestyle sacrifice to spend less time with my family, it was a ‘good, stable salary position.’  It was recommended to me by this person that as the years went on in my field, there would be more competition and it would be harder to make a living.  I held back the thoughts that percolated in my mind, but it felt more like a challenge than their ability to conjure up fear.

 

What I wanted to tell this employer is that I had discovered one of the secrets to success.  Something that allowed me to be self-employed and enjoy the ebb and flow in life and control the stuck moments: I keep moving.
