This one came from Tala. Last night before going to bed, she said, “Mommy, I should probably smile before going to bed so that I won’t have bad dreams anymore!” And then, she had this beautiful and big smile that almost span from one side of her face to the other. Then, I asked her, “Why did you have to do that?” She replied, “Because I do not want to have any bad dreams anymore – and if I smile, the bad dreams will go away!”
I do not know where she got that from, but I was impressed!
One of the things successful people do at the end of the day is exactly what Tala said. These successful people think happy thoughts before hitting the sack, not necessarily smile but they think of happy thoughts. They say that whatever was the last five or ten minutes occupying our minds before bedtime, that will tremendously affect our sleep and then eventually will appear in our dreams as either good or bad, depending on the previous thoughts.
This is also true especially when you are about to take a test. I know when I was in highschool and college, I used to have this secret which I learned from the many “magical tricks” that Madam Josefina Bumatay (my 3rd grade teacher), taught me. She said that if I wanted to memorize everything from the book, I have to place the book under my pillow. As an obedient student I began the habit of doing that which even to these days I sometimes practice it, if I needed extra boost in my presentation. I think and think again of the words/presentation I needed to memorize before I go to bed and the next morning, I will have a good memory of what I read the night before.
This is also the reason why people say it is very effective to read the night prior to a major test – or even to use one of the most overly-used strategies in reading: skimming. Skimming works in the same way as I mentioned above. Because a person thinks about the test before bedtime, the retention rate will be very high. However, it is not to say that YOU have to skim in order to score well.
If you want to be successful, think about what you want every night before bedtime and you will be able to get it.
Or if you just want to simply have a peaceful rest, smile and think happy thoughts – just like what Tala did.
